Paap Punya and Karma

 Hot Jobs

We are very much familiar with these words in our day-to-day life. Especially for people following religions having their birthplace in Bharat (India) these words form the very basis of their faith.

We do understand Paap as Sin and Punya as Virtue or Good Merit and Karma as action, but it’s really interesting to know more about these words in detail. In this post, I shall be explaining these words in context of Jainism and will conclude with an understanding that we are in fact surrounded by the vicious circle of Paap , Punya and Karma which needs to be broken if one wishes for liberation throughkevalgyaan.

Karma, in simple English means results of your own actions. These actions may have been performed in your present birth, or in your past. What are these actions? These actions or reactions are either Paap or Punya i.e. either a Virtue or a sin. Karma simply puts the situation in front of you, how you then act or react is labelled as Paap or Punya. If you do something good or more generally something without any selfish desire , or help someone in need your action or reaction is deemed as Punya if you do something with a selfish intent , or hurt someone it is deemed as Paap or sin.

These actions of either Paap or Punya further bond more karma and give you the result sooner or later depending upon various factors like the intensity of action or reaction, time etc… (We’ll deal with this later when we discuss about Karma in more detail).

Let’s take an example for more clarity. Say Manthan has earned a lot of money. Now he has earned so much money because it is the result of his past Karmas. He might have done some meritorious acts in his previous or present life like donating someone x amount of money etc… Now, his karmas have created the situation or the circumstances around him of being rich. Now how he uses this money would determine his actions as either Paap or Punya. If he uses it for satisfying his selfish pursuits of buying luxurious cars, dining in expensive restaurants etc… it’ll be identified as Paap and he’ll bond the karmas accordingly wherein in his next birth he might not get so much money or may become bankrupt etc… If he uses this money for good purposes (and with a clear intent) like feeding the hungry, or donations etc… then his actions are deemed as that of Punya and earn him more Karma which would result in having more money or more good stuff around him in future.

Let’s take another example for clarity. Ashish had a tough day at work, his boss shouted at him, his car got damaged, he fell down and hurt himself while walking home and so on. Now when he comes home, his wife shouts at him for forgetting their anniversary. What would be his reaction?

Let’s just reanalyse the entire situation. All the bad things that happened to Ashish , his boss, his car, injury , and on top of all that his wife shouting at him , all these were simply the result of his own Karmas. He might have done something really bad in the past, due to which he was facing such a situation. Now Ashish has two options while confronting his wife either react with extreme anger and start a fight or respond with softness and explain her how his day went so bad (and wish her too). In the former case, he would bond more Karma as it is Paap or sin to get angry (There are a total 18 ways of committing sin called Athaar Paapsthaanak which we’ll be covering in more detail in the near future) and in the latter by responding softly, he wouldn’t bond any more Karmas. His cycle of anger ended there and there itself. Hence, we are always advised to always respond and never to react. By responding to the situation we accept the situation as it is and we always find a way out of the situation. If he was to react angrily, he would bond more karma and in order to remove those karmas he would have to take birth again and again in this world or sansaar as we know it.

So as you can see our actions or reactions (Paap or Punya) to the situations or circumstances in which we are (Karma) cumulatively binds us in a vicious never-ending circle of innumerable births in the sansaar. The only way out is to accept the circumstances and situations we are in and respond to them. This would constantly debit the number of karmas that had been credited to our account due to our past actions. If we follow this simple rule in our daily life we would debit a lot of karmas and credit very few.

Our biggest baddest mistake is that we always try to take control of the situation we are in and in the process create innumerable more such situations and circumstances in future. Don’t try to take control of the situation but simply embrace it. Whatever you have today with which you identify yourself name, fame, family, money, education etc… are the results of your past karmas or simply put the result of your past actions or reactions.

When the cowherd pierced a stick into Mahavir Prabhus ear, prabhu didn’t react angrily or he never even tried to defend himself. He knew, in his heart that the reason why he is doing this to me is because I might have done something similar to him in my past life (Read 16th Life Triprushta Vasudeva). He knew in his heart that he needs to get rid of these karmas that are bonded because of his past actions. And by not reacting or revolting against him, he didn’t bond any more karma. So the cycle ended there for Mahavir.

So basically Paap and Punya are our actions or reactions to the situations or circumstances which are generated by our own Karmas which again is nothing but the result of our previous actions or reactions i.e. Paap or Punya. The only way out is to accept the situation as is with and embrace it with compassion and forgiveness.

We are all simply moving in circles endlessly, aimlessly. What goes around comes back around.

*Celebrate Parents Worship Day on 14th Feb*

The supremely benevolent message of Param Pujya Sant Shri Asaramji Bapu, the benign well-wisher of mankind!
India is the sacred land of holy rishis, munis and divine incarnations. In ancient times, people would greet each other by saying , “Rama-Rama!”.

 Hot Jobs
How great the idea hidden behind this custom is! They uttered the Lord’s name twice to signify that the same consciousness of the Supreme Lord abides equally in both people greeting each other, and that they offer their salutations to that. Such divine spirit alone represents pure ‘love’. A pure, guileless, selfless sense of affection, free from desire is called love. This custom helped people to remember the lord even while meeting each other.

Today, such pious feelings of pure and selfless love have given way to the degenerative passion and lust, which has now come to be accepted as love. 14th February is celebrated as ‘Valentine’s Day’. Young boys and girls in the west exchange greetings cards, chocolates and roses with each on this day.

Revelries like ‘Valentine’s Day’ that encourage people to live an immoral life are the prime factor behind widespread rejection of traditional sexual codes in many countries. This has caused the degradation of such nations. Even after spending crores of dollars on ‘abstinence only’ campaigns in schools, government of these nations have failed to solve the consequent problems.

Now this evil custom has infiltrated into our country as well. Therefore, now it is our duty to preserve our traditional moral values by boycotting the celebration the celebration of ‘Valentine’s Day.’

While naming this day (Valentine’s Day) as the ‘Youth’s Disaster Day’ and awakening the people to its terrible consequences, His Divine Holiness Pujya Bapuji has this to say: “King Claudius of Rome must have been very well aware of the power of celibacy; that is why he had forbidden his military forces from getting married, so that they remained physically and mentally fit enough to win wars. Prohibition of marriage was forcibly imposed on the armed forces, and hence St. Valentine, who himself being a Christian priest could not have been an opposer of celibacy, had got them married secretly. Later, he was found guilty and the king had him hanged to death. Then in the year 496 AD, Pope Galessius began to celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ in the memory of that saint.

“Those who celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ in the present manner, do in fact insult the saint himself; for they try to start a love-affair before their actual marriage by sending Valentine cards to one another. Had St. Valentine supported this system, he would not have solemnized the marriages in the first place.

“Do celebrate the day of love (Valentine’s Day), but with self-restraint and for true development. If young boys and girls meet, it will only lead them to ruin.

“What a sharp contrast is there between this western celebration of Valentine’s day, which promotes nothing but passion, lust and promiscuity and our own glorious culture wherein there are holy festivals like ‘Raksha Bandahana’ and ‘Bhai Dooj’ spreading such pious feelings as ‘परस्परं भावयन्तु... ‘May there be mutual goodwill among us’. – ‘let us work for the all-round prosperity of one another’ and तन्मे मनः शिवसंकल्पमस्तु… ‘May my mind be always blessed with auspicious thoughts’.

“In the future, they will breed irritability, emptiness, depression, frustration, premature old age and death. Indians; therefore, should guard against blindly aping such things. You are sons and daughters of Mother India. Celebrate ‘Love Day,’ wherein children pay respect to parents and parents shower affection on their children. Will you do it my darlings? The west is on ruinous path. People there are falling prey to sexually transmitted diseases and depression celebrating the likes of ‘Valentine’s day’. Why should you imitate them?

“My dear young people and their parents! You are born on the pious land of India. You are the descendants of farsighted rishis. Shun ‘Valentine’s day’ which, in the name of love, debilitates the youth. O parents and their children! Love each other beholding the Lord in the other one and let your hearts be filled with Divine Joy. Not the false joy of sex, but the Joy of God, the Love of God and Bliss of God.

मातृदेवो भव | पितृदेवो भव | बालिका देवो भव | कन्या देवो भव | पुत्र देवो भव ||

( Matrdevo bhav ! pitrdevo bhav ! balikadevo bhav ! kanyadevo bhav ! putrdevo bhav! )

‘May the mother be thy God. May the father be thy God. May the little girl be thy God. May the daughter be thy God. May the son be thy God’.

‘Valentine’s day’, the day of love, should in fact be the day of loving the Lord abiding in every heart.

May all good come to the people of India and of the world! My brothers and sisters in India! Your conduct should be exemplary. It should help bring peace and happiness to my brothers and sisters of the whole world. Why should you ape the west? Rather they should get blessed following your footsteps.”

All patriotic citizens must make their respective contributions (in whatever form possible) towards the building of a strong future nation by engaging themselves in this act of national welfare.

NEVER FORGET YOUR PARENTS

 Hot Jobs

Lest you forget everything, never forget your parents.
Never forget that their obligations are innumerable.

Worshipped many deities on earth they have, to beget you,
So never hurt their pious hearts with your harshness.

Remaining hungry they themselves, fed you and raised you,
Do not spit poison, on those who have given you nectar.

They have fulfilled all your desires, and loved you deeply,
Fulfill all their wishes, never forget to do this.

Even if you earn millions and your parents are not made happy,
Never forget that without serving them millions are like ashes.

You want your children to serve you, become a child and serve,
What you do is what you get, never forget this justice.

They slept in the wet, but let you sleep in the dry,
Never forget the mother’s loving eyes, and let not tears come to them.

Lovingly flowers they have strewn, along your path
Never become a thorn in the path of those who guided you.

You can buy anything with wealth,
but you won’t be able to buy parents.

At all times their feet so pure, never forget to love them.

माँ-बाप को भूलना नहीं

 Hot Jobs

Bronchitis

Definition
Bronchitis is a condition in which there is an acute inflammation of the trachea and bronchi of the lungs, resulting in the accumulation and discharge of phlegm or sputum. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis is of short duration and is cured within a few weeks, while chronic bronchitis persists for much longer duration.

Causes
Aggravated Vata (air) blocks the Kapha (water) in the respiratory channels, the movement of the air gets interrupted, and phlegm accumulates in the lung tissue. In order to expel this phlegm, there is a natural reaction of coughing, which results in Bronchitis. This can be attributed to many reasons like inhalation of smoke and dust, physical exertion, intake of foods and drinks that have a drying effect on the body, and the obstruction of the trachea by food particles. Another cause is suppressing the natural urges of the body, such as passing stool and urine, hunger, thirst, sleep, sneezing, breathing, yawning, tears, coughing, etc.

Symptoms
Irritation in the throat, cough, tightness in the chest, and difficulty in breathing are some of the common signs of Bronchitis.

Ayurvedic View
Ayurveda calls this disease Kasroga and considers it to be caused by poor digestion. Poor diet, poor digestion and incomplete elimination of wastes lead to formation of ama (mucus) in the lungs. This creates a favorable ground for growth of infecting organisms in the bronchial area. Stress, poor lifestyle, bad circulation, and lack of rejuvenative measures can deteriorate the body’s immune response to invading organisms in the bronchial area.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Bronchitis is aimed at simultaneously correcting lung and stomach functions. Herbs are given to ease troubled breathing and expel phlegm. At the same time, Ayurvedic digestive formulas are prescribed to enhance the digestive fire in order to kill pathogens.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice
  • Stay warm and drink hot herbal drinks.
  • Suppression of natural urges should be avoided.
  • Regular body massage with warm sesame oil helps to pacify Vata Dosha and softens theKapha Dosha in the chest.
  • Cover your nose when you are in smoky and polluted atmosphere.
  • Take a steam treatment whenever you feel irritation in your throat.

Some Home Remedies
  • In case of dry cough, massage the chest with warm olive oil followed by the application of a very warm, moist compress (fomentation).
  • In case of productive cough, prepare a mixture of powdered dried ginger root, black pepper, and long pepper in equal amounts and store in an airtight container. Have ½ teaspoon of this powder mixed with ½ teaspoon of honey twice a day with lukewarm water.
  • Mix ½ teaspoon of licorice root powder, ½ teaspoon of black pepper powder, and ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder along with 7-10 basil leaves in 1 cup of water. Boil until liquid is reduced to half. Add ½ teaspoon of sugar and drink it lukewarm twice a day.

Kidney Stone

Definition
Kidney Stones are formed due to crystallization of minerals and waste materials found in urine. A kidney stone may be the size of a pinhead and may pass unnoticed through urine; or it can be large, up to the size of a grapefruit, and may obstruct the urinary pathway, causing acute pain and bleeding, as well as blocking the flow of urine. In Ayurveda, it is known as Vrukka Ashmari (vrukka means kidney and ashmari means stone).

CausesSome of the common causes of Kidney Stones include:
  • Following an improper diet and sedentary lifestyle
  • Working for long periods in direct sunlight
  • Doing excessive physical work
  • Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, tea, and coffee
  • Indulgence in heavy, oily, sweet, and indigestible foods and reduced intake of fresh vegetables, salt, and alkaline-producing foods
  • Drinking too little water
  • A diet high in meat, fish, and poultry
  • Suppressing the urge to pass stools and urine
Symptoms
There is acute pain in the flanks radiating towards the lower abdomen and groin area. The site of the pain depends on the site of the stone in the urinary tract. Pain is associated with severe perspiration, nausea and vomiting. There may be a burning sensation while urinating, or there may be urinary urgency or frequency. If the stone is large and sharp, it may erode the tissues, causing some bleeding through the urinary tract. Fever with chills might also be associated.

Ayurvedic View
According to Ayurveda, improper diet and lifestyle leads to aggravation of all three doshas (Ayurvedic humors) and impairment of the digestive fire, causing formation of toxins (ama) in the body. These toxins travel down the channels carrying urine, where aggravated doshas combine with it, causing its crystallization and leading to the formation of kidney stones.

Ayurvedic treatment of Kidney Stones involves the use of diuretic and stone-dissolving herbs in acute cases. The system is then cleaned and strengthened using toning and rejuvenating preparations.Panchakarma therapy is a very effective means of cleansing the body internally in order to help it regain strength.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice
  • Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, cold drinks, pickles, fish, poultry, meat, spinach, and chocolate.
  • Avoid sour, heavy, and dry food.
  • Increase intake of liquids like water, juice, soup, lime water, etc.
  • Be sure to drink enough water each day. Usually 1 to 2 liters of water per day is adequate. Drink more if you are perspiring heavily, working outdoors, the weather is hot, etc.
  • Increase the use of barley, horse gram (a type of bean), ginger, and brown rice or parboiled rice.
  • Avoid suppressing urges to urinate and defecate.
Some Home Remedies
  • Make a powdered preparation of equal quantities of the bark of three-leaved caper tree (varun), puncture pine (gokhru), thatch grass (kas) and horse gram (kulth). Have 1 teaspoon of this powder 3-4 times a day with water. This is one of the best home remedies for kidney stones.
  • Boil 1-2 figs in 1 cup of water for 15-20 minutes and have this twice a day.
  • Boil 10-12 basil leaves in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes. Mix 1 teaspoon of honey in it and take twice a day.
